Les Miserables

Today I received this novel in the mail. This will be my first time of reading Les Miserables and I am embracing myself for all waves of emotions.

I am hoping to have this book read by Christmas as it is in Australian cinemas on boxing day 2012.

The Amble side online forum have a thread going for all that are reading this novel right now.

I'm interested to know if you have read this, what your thoughts are, did you like it?

Would you like to join me in reading it again or for the first time like me?

I would love to discuss Hugo's epic novel here on my blog too with anybody else willing to take the plunge at this time of the year.

Whaddya say?

  1. Here is a little trivia - Les Mis contains one of the longest sentence ever written with 823 words (in French) giving the reader an description of King Louis Philippe, see if you can find it!! However it isn't the longest sentence ever written as has been reported!! That is 847 words long:))

I read it when I was around 15 or 16 because my brother had just read it and I had the attitude, if he could read it, so could I. I found it sad, so sad:(( but beautiful never the less. Its the sort of book that you need to read slowly and it can get heavy in parts, but it really is full of action. My son and I watched a French version of the book some years ago (it was shown on SBS on Sunday evenings). Each episode when for 1 hour and I think it ran for 8-10 episodes. Hearing it in French made it more authentic and accurate to the book - even then it didn't cover everything in the book, it was pretty close. I see that this version is based on musical, it does look gritty and beautifully done - will be interesting to see what its like. I think it will give the essences of the book but as you will find when reading the book, there is so much more to Jean Valjean than can be placed in a movie/musical.

When I had finished it I wanted to call any daughter I had Cosette and any son Marius!!

Having read it once, I won't be joining you in reading it again, but I do look forward to reading your comments on it.

  2. PS - just checked, this is the version I watched and went for 6 hours. It is considered one of the best as its true to the book.
